Handmade Review #2

Timothy's Handmade Review #2 (8.28.08)

Ok it is time for the Handmade Review #2. Last week I bought some great hair clips From the ClippyHut. I just received them yesterday and HERE is the full review...video included

I love everything about the indie world of handmade. Etsy has changed my life.... and i would love to give back to the Etsy community.
Near the end of every week I will be purchasing one item from one Etsy shop. Once I receive the item i will feature that shop and their item on my blog.
If you are an Etsy shop owner I would love to consider your shop for the Handmade Review.
This week i will be looking at items less than $20.

To be considered for the Review there are 2 simple steps:
One... leave a comment here on this post telling me how you discovered ETSY.
Two..... Show me what you GOT on the forum thread HERE

Hey- I found ETSY on a recommendation way back in early 2006. When we were living in Singapore in 2007, ETSY was a great way for me to keep working and selling and stay connected with the USA.

Hi..My cousin recommended etsy to me last Christmas. I started selling jewelry on etsy in July.

I used to sell my jewelry on my blog and another etsyian and blogger told me about etsy in the comments.

So I showed up in June of 07.

I was on a site for stay-at-home moms, looking for a way to make money from home. There was a thread about etsy. That was two years ago. The rest is history.

Etsy's changed my life too. :)

Thanks Timothy!

I found etsy being talked about on Rachael Ray's show and my son found an article about it in one of his business magazines. So I decided to give it a try for the last eight months.

What a fun idea! I found Etsy through a blog that I had been reading. She was selling jewelry and bath and body items at the time.

My best friend sent me a link to etsy.com while I was at work. I had never heard of it but I think I spent a good two hours on the clock that day looking through the site in awe.
It was love at first sight!

I learned about Etsy from a jewelry magazine forum.

I found Etsy through another indie site called wickedlychic.com. I was looking through the pages of wickedly chic and noticed that there was some really cool, funky jewelry there. When I clicked on the links they all took me to Etsy stores. It didn't take me long to realize the handmade theme, and I have been in love with Etsy ever since.

I found Etsy accidentally. I was link-hopping from boygirlparty.com to find other sites I might like and somehow landed at Etsy. At first, I thought it was just 1 person's website/shop and then I realized the wonderful depth of Etsy and have been addicted ever since.

I had heard some other people who were into zines talking about etsy so I decided to sign up for a shop in 2006. I didn't really know what to do with the shop so it sat there until 2007 when I really started taking care of it and adding more than my zines. Now I have listings for custom buttons, catalog buttons and fresh roasted coffee. It has worked well for me over time.

Rebecca D. Dillon said...

I discovered etsy back when it first started through the craftster forums. That was when all listings were free. I didn't really sell anything then and have only focused on selling on etsy since the beginning of this year. http://soapdeli.etsy.com

I discovered Etsy on craftster.org too. I'd been trying to sell stuff on my own website for about 2 or 3 years, with very little lucky.. (I was actually "against" Etsy for a little while, since they charged fees and I thought that was silly) but then I decided to throw a dollar's worth of listing fees out there - and I was hooked from then on :)

I found Etsy from a crafter in a small business group that a friend and i started. Though business is slow for me, I truly love it here and believe it's where I belong...
I mention Etsy to everyone I talk to. So many artists I meet still don't know about it, so I love to spread the word! I tell them how it's so much cheaper than E-bay, and a great community for any creative.

Anonymous said...

Actually, I found Etsy by accident, by browsing some artists on Deviant Art... There was a link to their Etsy shop... and within the hour I was hooked!

I found Etsy late one night while googling crafty things & stumbled upon the blog of an Etsy peep.

Novmebr of 2006 I purchased something from an Etsy crafter, bloodandgold from Canada for the first time http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=5009895

My sister in Florida told me about Etsy. In February 2007 I began selling my art wares on Etsy. I love the community team spirit of Etsy crafters and artists. I belong to several street teams and I am the leader of one, California Crafters CLub of Etsy CCCOE. I bought a space in Timothy's first book of Etsy sellers. Etsy should hire me. I hae been selling arts and crafts for 40 years. I have been selling on-line since 1998. The websites keep on disappearing, just like Brick and Mortar galleries disappear, only faster.

I learned about etsy through my husband. He got a press release from etsy at the newspaper he works at and had a reporter do a story on etsy. But, since I'm related, I couldn't be part of it ={ still, etsy got local press coverage thanks to Mr. Reycled Ideas! He encouraged me to open up shop.

I found Etsy through one of my favorite photographers on deviantART. She sells handmade books and such. Then I kept running into people selling things on the site, but for some reason I didn't bite until an old college friend mentioned his store on his blog.

I looked into it and opened my store a few days later. This has been the best selling month since I started this business.

To be honest, I don't really remember where I saw or found Etsy. But It's been great too. It has taught me EXTREMELY valuable lessons on how to run a business before I open up a brick and mortar bakery. I've made many crucial mistakes that I have learned from and will hopefully not make them again so I can have a successful business.

BTW, I love your stuff. I have you favorited in my bakery.

It was back in 2006. I started trying to sell my jewelry and art online and was trying to find different venues for it.

Until then, I had been selling my work by word of mouth. I decided to try and promote through MySpace. I figured that was a good way to network and get myself out to a wide variety of people. (Unfortunately MySpace became too big and crazy.)

I'm pretty sure I came across Etsy through a MySpace "friend." I can't tell you who anymore but I thank them nonetheless. It was a great find.

I have been on etsy for just over a year. About 2 years ago I had a few friends mention etsy to me but I just didn't have the time to research and get signed up on etsy. Last year while on a supply buying trip with the same friends they really stressed the need for me to get signed up on etsy. Well, when I got back home I pulled out the laptop & started investigating. It didn't take me long to start seriously thinking of opening a shop. It has been a wonderful year and can't wait to see what the next year has in store for me.

Allie said...

Hi!, I learned of etsy from my cousin's wife (her etsy shop is lillitutu). I was asking her about selling venues. Etsy was also recommended by a woman I knew from a mommy and me group in Santa Cruz, CA.

I found etsy over a year ago when i was in one of my soapmaking forums. I use to sell on feebay prior to etsy so it has changed my life in a couple ways. One the fees and easy of use are much better, and i am only in competition with other handcrafted goods, and two i preffer to buy handmade now. After seeing all the amazing artist on etsy it was a simple desision to make.

Oh let's see... first, I want to say that I always appreciate what you give back to Etsy and contribute to the forums!

Now... I found Etsy because I've always made handmade goods on the side for extra money. Bluntly, times can get tight as a single Mom with two kids so sewing into the night helps. I really wasn't thrilled about Ebay and a friend of mine on a Parenting forum told me about Etsy. She said it would be a great place to get more exposure and network. It has been just that.

I found Etsy just after Hurricane Katrina through a fundraising effort by Crafters United. I had been looking to donate something to the survivors and came across them in a Google search. In fact, it inspired me to make upcycled bags and purses to begin with!

Hi,

I don't know that you will even see me, there are so many posts. I found Etsy one day searching on the internet for beads. I believe things happen for a reason, I had just started making Jewelry and needed a place to sell. I have been selling for a year here on Etsy August 26th. I never dreamed I would be where I am at right now as far as what I am designing, but I love every minute of it. I'm like you I love ETSY, and the Art of creativity.

How I found Etsy: I had decided to give this artist thing a shot for real, but didn't know how to start. One evening, while my husband was on an attempted thousand-mile motorcycle journey, I decided to go downtown to find this lingerie shop to get something nifty to welcome him home with. While there, I was admiring the gorgeous corsets created by a local designer, who turned out to be Etsy seller cicatrix--I looked up her shop, started looking around Etsy, and $0.20 later, I had my first listing!
